The city has been inhabited since the prehistory, but the present-day city was founded by the Pechenegs during the late 10th century AD. It is derived from the name of the city of Kishinev (Кишинев), which was originally named “Мышты” (Myshti), and was in turn derived from the Ukrainian-Slavic language word Mys, and the word khishyn meaning empty or waste.
Kishinev came to the Romanian language from Russian language. Historically, the name was spelled and Romanianized as Kishinev (Кишинев or Cişinev), with the current spelling adopted in 1929. It is the second largest city in the country by population and the eleventh most populous city of Romania. It has been the capital of all of the Moldavian Principalities and of the Principality of Moldavia, as well as of the Kingdom of Romania.
